African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is an academic network that enables Africa’s talented students to become innovators who propel scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. The South African Centre is one of six across Africa, which include Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Tanzania, and Rwanda.

AIMS South Africa was established in 2003 as a partnership project with the universities of Cambridge, Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Oxford, and this particular group of masters students are working on data science research. This means they study both the theory of extracting information from data as well as looking at particular applications such as systems of finance and health. Examples of projects would be working on detection of loan defaulters, and creation of models of data research which simplify enormous amounts of data.

This particular workshop of students based at AIMS Cape Town, was funded by the German Alexander von Humboldt foundation.

The perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of a big town. Food was WOW! We didn’t know when to stop. Clean rooms, green outdoors, plenty of space to relax and chill. Friendly staff and friendly cats and dogs!!!! No water shortage. Don’t want to leave. Hopefully we’ll be back again soon.
